Samsung: Something Big is Coming…

Samsung has just posted a teaser video for an announcement they are to make at IFA in Berlin. The announcement will be made on 1st September.

The teaser displays people walking around with a device that glows. Looks like the announcement could be phone-related, because one of the actors puts the device up to his ear.

Teaser 1:

Which device do you guys think will be announced? Would you like to see an Ice Cream Sandwich device – aka Nexus Prime? Maybe a nice large 5.29-inch Super AMOLED Plus display? Maybe the 7-inch Honeycomb tablet.

Your guess is as good as mine!

For now, take a look at the teaser 2:

Speculation starts!

How Far Are We?

  • India is one of the oldest and the most vibrant democracies.
  • India has a wonderful blende of cultures, people and beliefs.
  • India is slated to grow at 8.5% this year. Very impressive.

The list goes on and on…

I was watching NDTV, and news just broke that Karnataka’s Education Minister wants to make teaching Bhagvad Gita compulsory in schools. Well, good thought, but when was religion ever part of formal education. Now the twist:

The Karnataka’s Education Minister also says: “Those who oppose the teaching of the Bhagvad Gita in schools should leave India.”

Alright, that was uncalled for. Healthy debates are always good in a democracy, and we’d like to keep it that way.

But then, things just got worse. Senior leader from the state, Dhananjay Kumar, said “all faiths that have not originated in India are ‘western’ and their followers ‘outsiders’.” Link to the video

These are leaders… our leaders…and we say India is moving forward? These leaders we have right now are more than capable of running this country to the ground.

Begs the question, how far are we? From where we want to be…

Rupert Murdoch and the BSkyB Takeover

I’ve been watching the English Premier League on ESPN Star for years. ESPN have a deal with british Broadcaster Sky to show EPL in India.

Whats Happening?

Rupert Murdoch is trying to buy BSkyB, the parent company of Sky Sports.

Who is Rupert Murdoch?

Rupert Murdoch is an Australian American media mogul and the Chairman and CEO of News Corporation. He was listed three times in the Time 100 as among the most influential people in the world. He is ranked 13th most powerful person in the world in the 2010 Forbes The World’s Most Powerful People list. With a net worth of US$6.3 billion, he is ranked 117th wealthiest person in the world.

Interestingly, Rupert Murdoch owns News of the World, one of Britin’s leading newspapers. It was announced on 7 July 2011 that, after 168 years in print, the newspaper will print its final edition on 10 July 2011 following revelations of the ongoing phone hacking scandal, with the loss of 200 jobs.

Why should Murdoch’s Bid for BSkyB be Rejected?

  • News of the World’s ongoing phone hacking scandal occurred under the watch of Murdoch’s ownership. I don’t see how the regulators will accept Murdoch’s bid for BSkyB after he has run News of the World, a 168 year old publication, into the ground.
  • Fox TV in the US is owned by Rupert. Its the most stupid and biased news TV channel. Again, it has grown so under the watch of Rupert.
  • I continue to watch the EPL on ESPN. If Murdoch does buy BSkyB, I have a feeling he might push ESPN to pay more for the feed. He has made such moves before. I really love ESPN’s broadcast of the EPL. Will be very disappointed if the broadcaster changes.

Plastic Ban in Hyderabad

In some great news, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation has decided to ban the use of plastic carry bags and cups within the Corporation limits. This is a fantastic move by the Hyderabad administration to preserve the environment.

The ban imposed by GHMC is on plastic bags measuring below 40 microns in thickness.

How this affects you?

  • After shopping at your local grocery store, the grocer will charge you Rs 3 for each plastic bag (I am assuming they are going to supply plastic bags that measure above 40 microns).
  • There are cops doing the rounds in civil clothes, who will find you using plastics and fine you Rs 500.

Now to the bad part. This opens up a Pandora’s Box… Corruption. Instead of charging Rs 500 officially, the cops might charge Rs 100, and that goes into their pocket rather than to the Government.

Lets hope this move forces governments across India to adopt a similar model.

Being Paranoid is Good…

Technology changes every single moment. Only the innovators survive. The feeling of being paranoid brings out the best in technological innovation.

For any company, being paranoid is a good position to be in. It brings out the need to innovate, and the hunger to succeed, in the face of fear…of perishing.

So the next time you get a kick up your back side, remember, it could be the best thing that happened to you…

Success breeds complacency. Complacency breeds failure. Only the paranoid survive. — Andrew Grove

Boss’s Last Day at Google

It’s Boss’s last day at Google.

He’ll be moving to FB, to a very exciting role.

He says he reads the blog. Just wanted to thank him. A true leader…

More than creating or managing sales/processes, he has created a following, as Seth Godin puts it. He has built his tribe

His team created a video for him:

If words could express, I’d go to war with him by my side…

Good luck and All the Best! You’r a winner…

Google+ Initial Reactions

Ok I’ve been following real time results on Google and Twitter to see what people have to say about Google+, one hour into the launch…

All I can say is, really proud to work for this wonderful company :)

Some Interesting Reactions from around the world:

  • The most promising part of Google+ is that it isn’t a monolithic social network, but four simple apps trying to succeed on their own merits.
  • Google builds a product I want now. I need an invite to Google+, please ;-)
  • Is it rude that my first google+ post is “First” so that everyone after me feels inferior?
  • Google+ also looks to have a great design. It seems very clean and elegant, but not lifeless.
  • I have to say, I’m seriously excited about playing with Google+
  • Google+ allows segmentation of social graph into multiple first-class subsets (friends, family), goes far beyond Facebook Groups.
