There are two fundamental constraints to Retail Media Networks (RMNs): Audience Size: RMNs and retargeting are closely related because they both depend on a finite audience—namely, the visitors to a retailer's website. This naturally limits the growth potential for both strategies. Just like retargeting, where effectiveness is capped by the number of users already engaging with a brand, RMNs are constrained by the traffic to the retailer’s ecosystem. If fewer people visit the site, the available audience for RMN ads shrinks, which in turn can reduce revenue, assuming a constant return on ad spend (ROAS). While expanding to offline shoppers or using lookalike audiences can increase reach, performance may not be as strong. Performance (Incrementality): The second key issue is incrementality—or rather, the lack of it. Serving an ad through an RMN doesn’t necessarily result in a new, incremental sale. Many of these ads reach shoppers who likely would have purchased the product anyway. This mirrors the problem with retargeting: when ads primarily reach people who are already inclined to buy, the impact of the ad spend diminishes. Advertisers are becoming more aware that increasing their RMN budget doesn’t always translate into a corresponding rise in sales. In the early days of RMNs, or even before they were called RMNs I had the honor of working with HookLogic, Inc. (Acquired by Criteo in 2016) advertisers were eager to spend more because ROAS was so high. But when budgets weren’t fully spent, the solution became offsite retargeting. Any change from an measurement standpoint on the advertiser side can cause a step up or down in spend. Singapore's scorching heat isn't just a reason to crave ice cream – it was also the perfect opportunity for Unilever to reach customers with their Magnum Remix campaign.   Looking to go beyond traditional display and video ads, Unilever partnered with The Trade Desk and Mindshare to launch a programmatic DOOH (digital out-of-home) campaign. DOOH advertising allows brands to connect with audiences through digital billboards and outdoor screens located in public settings such as shopping centres, transportation hubs, and other public venues. This effectively helps to capture the attention of consumers on the move. Clearly, Singaporean consumers discovered a taste for Unilever’s DOOH campaign, resulting in 1.8 times more footfall traffic for Magnum Remix and over 8 million footfall conversions in under a month! To think, it was just a handful of years ago that we were talking about Linear TV planning with digital as a 'topup'. Fast-forward to now when mainstream brands are actively considering going YouTube First to achieve their reach goals -- just another humbling reminder of how many lives this powerful little platform touches. And with the number of people streaming YouTube on their TV screens in Malaysia (me included), who's to say it isn't the largest 'network' on air? We recently partnered with Kantar to release a new study on Retail Media Networks in SE Asia showing the RMN trend, while early days, is growing faster in SE Asia than global averages and is indeed a Full Funnel Omni-channel experience. 🌊The study by GrabAds and Kantar found that RMN ad spend is expected to surge by 73% in the next seven years, surpassing growth rates in search (47%) and social (45%). 🇮🇩 The study forecasts that Indonesia will lead the pack with a projected 13.41% CAGR in RMN ad spend, with 🇻🇳Vietnam and 🇹🇭Thailand rounding out the top three. 🙋🙋‍♀️🙋‍♂️ The study noted that unlike the other RMN types that cover specific purchase stages, superapp RMNs can reach consumers at all stages of their buying journey, from awareness to purchase. This includes offline and online touchpoints, which are becoming increasingly key as shopping evolves into an omnichannel experience. https://lnkd.in/gbZSUzbq

#Retailmedia is booming in South East Asia. And while it’s also popular in other regions, there’s an interesting SEA trend setting the market apart. This is a far more collaborative approach to data between the big players — super apps and brands like Gojek, foodpanda, Deliveroo and Tokopedia. As the analysis I’ve shared in the comments points out, this is likely the result of how diverse and fragmented SEA is – at least 9 separate markets with their own culture, consumer habits and data privacy laws. This means brands need to cooperate to target customers across these markets. While it's still early days, it will be interesting to see if there are lessons for brands in the West, who are much more guarded with their data

Years back, I worked at a place called WatConsult (before Dentsu bought it). Its owner had a SEPARATE WASHROOM for HIMSELF. Yeah, a separate, EXCLUSIVE washroom where NO ONE ELSE was EVER allowed. (You can verify this with ANY ex-employee of this agency's Worli office circa 2016-17 or so.) ALL OTHER (lowly) employees had to go to a shitty, "lower class" washroom meant for them. Yikes. IMAGINE the sheer arrogance AND classism that makes such behaviour even REMOTELY "acceptable"/"normal". But it indeed WAS back then. Not a single SOUL questioned it. REALLY took you back to the good ol' days of CASTEISM, UNTOUCHABLES, etc. THIS, is the EXACT SAME type of arrogance that allows some tax evading aｓｓhole to demand that you work 70 HOURS each WEEK. The EXACT SAME power-trip that lets billionaires (who could EASILY eradicate COUNTLESS problems) get away with GROTESQUE 600 MILLION DOLLAR WEDDINGS. The EXACT same type of UNDESERVING authority that makes rich ғucks think they can PAY you as they please, TREAT you as they please, DEDUCT your money as they please, EXPLOIT you as they please, whilst never EVER sharing the PROFITS born out of said EXPLOITATION. What major "loss" is your RICH AF company owner going to incur if they let everyone just have ONE day off to let them enjoy a "long weekend"? FACT, you are a SLAVE. FACT, just because this slavery looks a "little better" than what colonial slaves or the blacks experienced, doesn't mean it's ACCEPTABLE. And do you know what the FIRST STEP to getting out of this INJUSTICE is? Anger. Rage. FURY. DON'T get me WRONG. I'm NOT asking you to go psycho or do something stupid. Also, I'm NOT asking you to hurt others or ragequit. What I AM asking you is to FEEL that anger. Fully, deeply. FEEL the sheer ANGER of all the INJUSTICE done not only to YOU, but the majority of HUMANS. And then, I seek that you DO SOMETHING about it. Channel it, INTELLIGENTLY. UTILIZE it to fight back the system, CREATIVELY. And yes, you can also punch pillows or vent through dancing/screaming. There's PLENTY OF harmless-yet-INVENTIVE ways to let that anger OUT. But yes, please, please, FEEL that anger first. Because while our world (wrongly) VILIFIES anger, WITHOUT anger, injustice and oppression would never EVER go. Without ANGER, we'd STILL be OWNED SLAVES. If you doubt it, ask a relative of a FREEDOM FIGHTER where WE'D BE without ANGER. You CANNOT escape SLAVERY (corporate or otherwise) if you never ever FIGHT BACK. Now whether you fight through Direct Confrontations; Unionizing; Mass Bunks; Mass Resignations; Mass Glassdoor Reviews; Social Media Posts; Using Mass Media Outlets, Co-signed Letters; or merely TALKING about said issues with near and dear ones to raise AWARENESS (and ANGER too); well, THAT'S all upto YOU. And yes, CREATIVE solutions like making Music Videos, Blogs etc. (amongst countless OTHERS) exist TOO. Step UP. Break FREE. End SLAVERY. For YOURSELF, and for ALL of HUMANITY. Message issued in human interest.
